Tchegera also offers many opportunities for excellent birding, with 301 different species recorded on and around the lake, including white-breasted cormorants, African fish eagles and pied kingfishers. During an evening walk, you may even be lucky enough to spot the family of short-clawed otters which often stop off in the island’s bay for some fishing!

Thanks to its crescent shape, Tchegera Island is a natural harbour so the waters that it encircles are calm and lend themselves perfectly to paddle boarding, kayaking or even snorkeling to try and spot; amongst other things; some of the 24 species of fish and 2 species of crab that are endemic to Lake Kivu.

"I have worked for Virunga National Park for 11 years since I completed my studies. I really appreciate the fact that the Park operates in a transparent and honest way. The Park also contributes heavily towards the well-being and development of local populations across North Kivu. It is an honour and a source of pride to work for Virunga National Park; which is why I really love my job"
