June was a great month for Tourism in Virunga National Park. The parks main attractions: the Mountain Gorillas & the Nyiragongo Volcano received 328 visitors in the “pre-high season” month of June. This number is 3,5 times as high as the number of tourists the Park received in June last year, indicating the interest in the park and the growing faith in the regeneration of this troubled region. We are looking forward to a very busy summer with an expected number of 1000-1500 visitors in July and August.
We would like to remind our visitors that 30% of the gorilla/volcano permit revenue is directly invested in community projects around the park; 50% is received by ICCN (wildlife authority of the Democratic Republic of Congo) and 20% is used by Virunga National Park for operational expenses.
